A workday in the life of a Japanese Tofu Cart Lady. Today I’m spending a day with Ako, a Japanese tofu cart lady who has been walking the streets of Tokyo’s Ojima area selling fresh tofu for the last 23 years. This traditional way of selling Japanese food was once a familiar part of everyday life in Japan, but today, tofu carts like hers have almost completely disappeared. During Japan’s Showa era, the sound of a tofu seller’s horn would echo through local Tokyo neighborhoods, letting families know fresh tofu had arrived. Residents would bring out their bowls to buy tofu directly from the cart. Ako continues that disappearing Japanese tradition today, but I quickly discovered her story is about much more than tofu.
Ako also runs Ako no Ariga Tofu, a local Japanese tofu shop selling traditional tofu and soy products. During the day, she prepares a buffet style bento with around 60 items, while at night the shop transforms into a Japanese izakaya.
As Ako makes her daily rounds, many customers come outside simply to talk with her. In a city where people often keep to themselves, her tofu cart has become a connection to an older Tokyo, when neighborhood communities were closer and local shopkeepers knew the people around them. This day in the life in Japan is not just about Japanese food. It is about one woman preserving a small piece of Japanese culture and community that is slowly disappearing.

A day in the life of a Japanese high school student at Miyazaki Marine High School. Unlike a typical school in Japan, Yuma studies Marine Resources and Environmental Management, learning about marine life, ocean environments, fish farming, and even professional diving.
With over 76 years of history and around 210 students, this Japanese maritime high school offers specialized courses in marine navigation, engineering, environmental science, and marine food science. Yuma’s first class is Sogo Jisshu, or Integrated Studies, where today he’s studying fish farming. Students identify real world problems, research possible solutions, and eventually present their findings, developing practical problem solving skills for their future careers.
Around 80 percent of students at the school enter the workforce directly after graduation, so Japanese school life here places a strong emphasis on hands on training. Students can even earn professional qualifications while still in high school. In Yuma’s course, that includes a commercial diver’s license and small vessel operator’s license.
High school life in Japan can also mean a much longer commute. While younger Japanese students typically attend neighborhood schools, high school students have fewer schools to choose from, with many commuting by train each morning to attend specialized programs like Yuma’s.
